The Mathematics Department at Middlesex offers a path for every student — from foundational algebra through AP opportunities and beyond. Read more about our philosophy or get started finding the right starting point for you. We ask that you submit the placement test no later than May 15th.
Our Approach
We support when needed, challenge when appropriate, cultivate sound reasoning skills, and encourage articulate communication of mathematical ideas.
The Mathematics Department aspires to lead all of our students to greater understanding of and appreciation for the power of mathematics. From algebra and geometry through calculus, statistics, and beyond, students learn to approach problems by integrating mathematical modeling, creative thought, and previous experience.
We aim to impart a genuine sense of the utility, power, and beauty of mathematics. As students progress through our curriculum, we hope that they will grow into the mathematics they explore — developing the confidence to understand theorems, to use techniques appropriately, to test results for reasonability, and to welcome new challenges whose outcomes are unknown. Students graduate from Middlesex empowered by their own hard-won understanding — equipped not just with skills, but with the habits of mind that make those skills meaningful.
For Incoming Students
All Middlesex students arrive having studied some algebra. The placement test helps us understand where you are — not judge where you should be. Students may be placed at any level depending on their background. The placement test has two parts, and both are administered with MyOpenMath.
This is to be taken by ALL incoming students. It is designed to take approximately 1–1.5 hours, but it is not strictly timed and may be completed in multiple sittings.
The second part covers advanced algebra and trigonometry topics and should be taken by students who have studied more than one full year of algebra, or by those looking for an additional challenge after completing Part 1.
You may use a calculator throughout the Placement Test, but no other outside aids.
Please submit your placement test by May 15th. The Department will review results and placements will be shared along with other course information later in the summer.
Many new students are placed in foundational or intermediate courses, while some arrive ready for higher-level work. There is no single "right" entry point — advancement is based on mastery, not pace. You should complete whichever parts of the test are appropriate, and the department places you based on the full picture of your work.
Have these ready:
Please work independently — do not consult textbooks, old notebooks, or any online or human resources.

The placement test helps us find your best starting point — it's not a pass/fail, just a map to your first course.
